Atherton Tablelands.
The
Atherton Tablelands is located between the Bellenden Ker Range
and the Great Dividing Range and has an altitude from 600m to
1050m. Located approx. 1 1/2hrs to 2hrs from Cairns the Atherton
Tablelands are a great place to explore the areas natural wonders
and to visit the small unique towns of the area and there attractions.
The town of Atherton has a population of close
to 6000 and is actually built on an extinct volcano called Hallorans
Hill. The town was the first settled town in the area and is home
to a variety of restaurants, hotels, caravan parks and motels
which cater to visitors.
A great activity to do from Atherton is take
a trip on the Tablelands Express steam train which takes passengers
on a 44 km journey through wetlands, forested areas, through tunnels,
by Carrington Falls and over timber trestle bridges while on your
way to the old tin mining town of Herberton where tin was discovered
in 1880.
