History of Cairns.
Aboriginal communities have lived in the surrounding area for 10,000+ years, due to the areas rich marinelife and wildlife the area supported strong local communities who used these resources to live.

In 1770 Captain James Cook visited the area today known as Trinity Bay on the HM Bark Endeavour. Later on this journey up the North Coast of Queensland the HM Bark Endeavour collided with the Great Barrier Reef close to what today is known as Endeavour River and Cooktown, the captain and crew where stranded while they repaired the HM Bark Endeavour before continuing there journey onto Papua New Guinea and Java.

It was not until the construction of the railway line between Cairns - Kuranda and the Atherton Tablelands that the city began to develop into the regional center it is today. The railway line helped shape Cairns industry and development into the most important of the region. In the late 1970s Cairns began to attract tourists, due to its proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and tropical rainforest. You will find no better base than Cairns City to explore the Northern Queensland tropics of Australia.
