Flora and Fauna
About 3,000 plant species from 210 families are found in the
Wet Tropics. Twelve out of the world's 19 families of primitive
flowering plants grow here. |
 |
Plants
The word 'rainforest' is an umbrella term for a great variety
of forest types with different structures and collections
of species.
|
 |
Mammals
The Wet Tropics region is home to about a third of Australia's
315 mammal species - including unique green possums, fierce
marsupial cats, kangaroos which climb trees and rare bats.
|
 |
Birds
While the Wet Tropics region is home to a quarter of Australia's
frogs or a little over a third of the country's freshwater
fish, it is home to nearly half of Australia's birds.
|
 |
Reptiles
Every year, new species of reptiles are described. At last
count in Cogger's Reptiles of Australia, 2000 edition, 1050
species of reptiles and frogs had been described. |
 |
Freshwater Fish
As with other types of animals, there is a great diversity
of freshwater fish in the Wet Tropics. Seventy-eight of Australia's
190 species occur here. |
 |
Frogs
As a region known for its extraordinary biodiversity, the
species richness of frog species in the Wet Tropics is consistent
with other animal groups.
|
 |
Invertebrates
It is paradoxical that the largest group of living things
on the planet is the least noticed! |
 |
Spiders
Australia leads the world in its number of resident venomous
spiders as well as the strength of their toxicity. |
 |
Butterflies
While there are many spectacular insects to see in the Wet
Tropics, probably none attract more attention than the delicate
butterflies and moths.
|
 |
Insects
Learning about insects means entering a world of numbers!
This is the most abundant animal type on earth, boasting almost
90% of all living things. |
