Cairns and Northern Queensland are to a variety of primary and secondary schools, the Tropical North Queensland Institute of TAFE, the James Cook University and numerous English language schools.

In Cairns and Queensland the school year consists of two semesters and runs from late January to mid December. There are two terms in each semester and holiday breaks for Easter, winter and spring.

In Cairns and Queensland it is law for children between the ages of 6 and 15 to attend school. Primary school covers years 1 to 7 and Secondary school covers years 8 to 12.
