Fitzroy
Island is a continental island located 22 kms east of Cairns,
Queensland. Continental island are bodies of land that are directly
connected to a continent. Over 10,000 years ago after the last
ice age, as sea levels rose Fitzroy Island was cut of from Cape
Grafton.
You will find 339 hectares of National Park
area on Fitzroy Island which offer a variety of hiking and exploration
options. An excellent walking track takes in the Northern end
of Fitzroy Island, and Fitzroy Island Lighthouse and Fitzroy Islands
highest peak which offers amazing 360 views of the island.
Fitzroy Island is one of the most unspoiled
islands of the Great Barrier Reef. You will find tropical rainforest,
rich birdlife, tropical beaches and the Great Barrier Reef comes
very close to the shore which is great for snorkeling. The coral
around Fitzroy Island is in excellent condition and you will find
a wide variety of tropical fish such as the clownfish, anemonefish,
parrotfish, wrasses and even green sea turtles.
The Aboriginal people have used Fitzroy Island
as a fishing and hunting ground for thousands of years. The Aboriginal
name for Fitzroy Island is Goon-Gan-Jee Island and Gabar Island.
In 1778, Captain James Cook named the island and since then it
has been used as a pearling base, Aboriginal mission and in World
War II an artillery gun base.
