Location
25kms northwest of Cairns in World Heritage Rainforest you will
find the unique tropical mountain village of Kuranda.
The Djabugay Aboriginal people lived in the Kuranda area for over
10,000 years, the first European settlers arrived in the early
1800s in the search for gold and timber. In 1888 the town was
first surveyed around this time also the construction of the railway
between Kuranda and Cairns begun. The railway and road which opened
up the area further for trade and settlement.
Kuranda was always attracted people, in the
1960s and 1970s the town attracted alternative lifestyle people
who where looking for a relaxed place to live. While over the
recent years Kuranda has become a popular tourist destination,
along the streets of Kuranda you will find a wide array of restaurants,
cafes, bars, handcrafted goods, tourist shops and Aboriginal art.
Kuranda is also home to a wide variety of attractions which includes
bird, wildlife and reptile parks, Aboriginal performing arts,
Barron Falls, hiking and exploration trips into the World Heritage
Rainforest, Kuranda Scenic
Railway and Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.
